Five simple ways to make your website faster

A site’s speed isn’t a perfectionist’s luxury: it’s the first filter between a visitor and a customer. One in two visitors abandons a page that takes more than three seconds to appear. The good news: a few well-aimed changes often make a big difference, no rebuild required.

1. Compress your images. By far the number-one culprit. A 4 MB photo straight from a phone has no business online: export it as WebP, at its real display size. You can cut the weight tenfold with no visible loss.
2. Load what’s visible first. Content at the top of the page should appear immediately; images further down can wait until you scroll (so-called “lazy loading”).
3. Clean up your plugins. Every plugin or third-party script adds weight. Remove the ones you no longer use — chatbots, maps, forgotten tracking pixels.
4. Limit your fonts. Two font families are plenty. Every extra weight is one more file to download before the text can show.
5. Measure, don’t guess. Run your page through Google’s PageSpeed Insights: it’s free, and it tells you exactly what to fix first.

Where to start?

If you only do one, do the first: images. On their own they often account for more than half a page’s weight. Start with your most-visited pages — the homepage, your services — and measure before and after.

A fast site isn’t a technical feat: it’s respect for your visitors’ time.
