One happy client is three new ones

Word of mouth is your best advertising, and it’s free. Here’s how to spark it without sounding like you’re begging for favours.

By Jean-François Gauthier

You can pay for ads, polish your site, post on social media… but nothing beats a satisfied client talking about you to the people around them. In Québec, in a small town as much as in a neighbourhood, reputation travels fast. A good word slipped to the right person often brings you more clients than a paid campaign. The good news is that you can encourage this word of mouth on purpose, without manipulating anyone.

Ask at the right moment

The secret is timing. The best moment to ask for a recommendation is right after a happy client, when the work is done and they tell you “thank you, it’s perfect.” That’s when their satisfaction is at its peak. A simple “I’d really appreciate it if you told people about me” lands easily, because it comes from a real moment of contentment, not a cold follow-up three months later.

Make it easy

People are willing to help you, but they’re busy. If recommending your business takes effort, it won’t happen. Your job is to remove the obstacles: give them the words, the link, the card, everything they need so all they have to do is forward it.

  • A short, easy-to-remember website address.
  • A direct link to your Google listing to leave a review in two clicks.
  • A few business cards to slip into a pocket.
  • A ready-made sentence they can copy and paste to a friend.

A small thank-you that sticks

When someone sends you a client, thank them for real. No need for a big gift: a sincere message, a discount on their next purchase, a coffee on you next time they drop by. The gesture matters more than the amount. Someone who feels appreciated will do it again, and they’ll talk about you even more warmly next time.

You don’t force a recommendation, you earn it and then make it easy. The rest is your good work doing the talking.

Leave a trace online

Today’s word of mouth also runs through the screen. A Google review, a mention in a local Facebook group, a shared screenshot: these are recommendations that stay visible for a long time. Encourage your happy clients to leave a public trace, and feature those good words on your site. A hesitant future client feels reassured seeing that others before them were well served.
