Tell your story to stand out

People buy from people, not logos. Your story, why you do what you do, is the one weapon big, faceless competitors will never have.

By Jean-François Gauthier

In your market, you’re probably not the only one offering your service. There’s the big chain, the competitor with a fatter budget, the app that promises the moon. Against that, cutting your prices is a race you can’t win. What you have that they never will is your story: who you are, why you started, and what keeps you going in the morning. That’s what makes people choose you.

People buy from people

Faced with two businesses offering the same thing at the same price, we almost always pick the one we trust. And we trust a face, a story, a person we relate to a little. A slick logo has never reassured anyone the way a sincere “here’s why I do this work” does.

That’s exactly where you beat the big players. They sell an anonymous, interchangeable service. You can put a name, a face and a reason behind yours. Being small isn’t a drawback here, it’s your best argument.

Finding your “why”

Your story doesn’t need to be dramatic. It needs to be true. Take five minutes and answer a few questions honestly. The answers are already in you; you just need to put them into words.

  • Why you got into this line of work rather than another.
  • The moment or spark that made you say “I’ll do this my own way.”
  • What frustrates you in your industry that you do differently.
  • The kind of client you love helping, and why.

Tell it the way you live it

Once you’ve found your “why,” put it front and centre on your site. A real “About” page written in the first person, with your photo and your own words, beats a hundred hollow lines about “excellence” and “passion for service.” Write the way you’d talk to a client in person. People instantly feel the difference between a lived-in text and one copied from elsewhere.

Your greatest strength isn’t being cheaper than the big guys. It’s being someone, while they’re no one.

Consistency, from your site to your handshake

Your story isn’t just one page on your site: it’s the thread that ties everything together. How you answer an email, your photos, the tone of your posts, the way you greet people on the phone. When it all speaks of the same person, people recognize you and remember you. That’s a brand: not a logo, but a steady, sincere impression.

If you want us to find your story together and tell it clearly on your site (without overdoing it, just true), write me. We’ll look at it together and put what makes you unique right where your clients will see it.
