Getting listed in Québec’s directories
The more your name, address, and phone appear identical all over the web, the more Google trusts you. Here’s where and how.
Imagine Google wants to confirm your business truly exists and really sits at the address you advertise. How does it do that? It checks whether the same information appears, identical, in lots of different places across the web. Each place your name, address, and phone show up is called a “local citation.” The more they match, the more Google believes you, and shows you to people in your region.
The trio to keep identical everywhere: the NAP
SEO folks call it the NAP: Name, Address, Phone. The golden rule is simple but crucial: always write them exactly the same way. “Blvd.” in one spot and “Boulevard” in another, a number with or without the leading 1, two spellings of your business name. These little inconsistencies plant doubt in Google’s mind and dilute your local strength.
Where to get listed in Québec
Start with the must-haves, then add the ones that touch your corner of the province. Your Google Business listing is the most important, but it isn’t alone. Big directories and regional or sector-specific listings count too, and often the basic listing costs nothing.
- Your Google Business listing, filled out completely.
- National directories like the Yellow Pages and 411.
- Your local or regional chamber of commerce.
- Directories for your town, county, or neighbourhood.
- Directories specific to your trade or sector.
Why it matters for a small business
You can’t beat the big chains on general keywords, but local search plays on different ground. When someone searches for a service “near me,” Google favours businesses whose location it’s sure of. A consistent presence in the right directories is exactly that certainty, and it’s often what gets you into the little pack of three businesses at the top of the map.
Google trusts what repeats. One name, one address, one number, always the same, everywhere.
Keep your list up to date
The classic trap: you move or change your number, you update your site… and forget the ten directories where your old details still linger. Now Google sees two versions of the truth and hesitates. Keep a simple list of the places you’re listed, and review it every time something changes. Ten minutes that spare you months of confusion.
If you’d like, we build the list of directories that matter for your business and your region together, and make sure your details are identical everywhere. Write me and we’ll look at it. Quiet work, but the kind that pays off for a long time.
