Structured data: earning Google’s rich results

The little stars, prices and hours that show up right in Google: that’s not magic, it’s structured data. Here’s the idea, without a single line of code.

By Jean-François Gauthier

You’ve surely noticed that some Google results stand out: little yellow stars, a price shown, opening hours, questions that unfold. Those results catch the eye and win clicks. The secret behind them has a slightly technical name, “structured data,” but the idea is simple, and you don’t need to code to understand it.

Speaking to Google in its own language

On your page, a human sees right away that a number is a price, that an address is an address, that a “4.8” is a rating. Google just sees text. Structured data is an invisible label you stick on each piece of information to tell the engine: “this is a price,” “this is a review,” “this is an opening time.” You change nothing about how your page looks; you just make it understandable to the machine.

Once Google clearly understands that information, it can choose to show it directly in the results. That’s what we call a “rich result” or “rich snippet”: your listing becomes bigger, more detailed, more tempting than a plain line of text.

What it can highlight

Depending on your trade, structured data can showcase different things. A restaurant can display its stars and menu, a craftsperson their reviews, a clinic its hours. These are details that answer the client’s question before they even click.

  • Your clients’ reviews and star rating.
  • Your prices or price ranges.
  • Your opening hours and address.
  • Frequently asked questions, unfolded right in Google.
  • Your events, recipes or product listings, depending on your field.

Why it’s worth it

A rich result takes up more room and inspires more trust. Between two links, the one showing “4.8 stars, open until 9 p.m.” almost always wins the click. You don’t necessarily rank higher on the list, but you become more visible and more credible where you are. With equal ranking, that’s often what makes the difference.

Structured data doesn’t cheat Google: it simply translates what your page already says, so Google can show it better.

No need to become a programmer

Good news: you don’t have to write that markup yourself. It’s technical work done once, behind the scenes, that keeps paying off afterward. What matters for you is knowing it exists and keeping your real information up to date: your hours, prices, reviews. The rest is invisible plumbing.
