Your Google profile: the most profitable local SEO (and it’s free)

Before your site even loads, it’s often your Google profile that decides whether a client picks you or the shop next door. And it costs nothing.

By Jean-François Gauthier

When someone types “restaurant near me” or “electrician Trois-Rivières,” your site isn’t what shows up first: it’s the little box with the map, the stars and the opening hours. That’s your Google Business Profile. It’s free, and for a local business it’s often the single most profitable tool out there. Yet half of shops leave it abandoned.

Claim it and fill it out completely

First step: go claim your profile to become its official owner. Then fill in EVERYTHING. Exact name, address, phone, website, precise category, service area, and above all up-to-date opening hours. Google rewards complete profiles, and nothing annoys a client more than an “open” sign when your door is locked.

  • Name, address and phone identical everywhere on the web.
  • The right primary category: be precise, not vague.
  • Opening hours up to date, holidays included.
  • A link to your site and a call button clearly visible.

Photos do more than you think

Profiles with real photos get far more clicks and calls. Show your storefront, your team, your products, your before-and-after. No photographer needed: your phone will do, in daylight, no filter. Add new ones now and then: a living profile builds trust, one frozen since 2019 does the opposite.

Reviews, your best salesperson

Google reviews are word of mouth gone digital, and they weigh heavily on who finds you and who picks you. Get in the habit of asking your happy clients. Most say yes, they just forget. And reply to everyone, even the less flattering reviews: a calm, professional response reassures the next hundred people who read it.

A complete Google profile, with photos and recent reviews, often beats a beautiful site nobody can find.

Stay active

Google likes living profiles. Post an update now and then, adjust your hours for the holidays, add your services. It takes five minutes a month and keeps you in the race. Combine that with a fast, well-ranked site, and you cover both places your clients look for you: the map and the search.

If you like, I can review your profile with you and wire it up to your site so the two reinforce each other. It’s the kind of quick win that costs nothing and pays off for years.
