Google Search Console: see your site through Google’s eyes

A free Google tool shows you exactly how it sees your site and which searches bring people in. Here’s how to use it without being a pro.

By Jean-François Gauthier

You have a site, but you wonder whether Google actually sees it? Good news: Google offers a free tool that answers that question, and many others. It’s called Google Search Console. You don’t need to be an SEO expert to use it: it’s like looking at your site through Google’s eyes, and discovering what people type before they land on you.

What it’s actually for

Search Console isn’t a visitor-stats dashboard like the others. It’s the direct line between Google and you. It tells you whether your pages are properly registered in Google, which searches bring people to you, and whether anything is stopping your site from being found. It’s the first tool I set up on every project, because it shows reality, not guesses.

Confirm that Google sees your pages

The first thing to check is indexing: are your pages actually in Google’s directory? An unindexed page is an invisible page, no matter how good it is. Search Console lists what’s registered and what isn’t, with the reason. Often a brand-new site simply needs a little time, and you can even ask Google to come take a look.

  • See which pages are registered in Google, and which are missing.
  • Submit your sitemap to help Google find everything.
  • Ask Google to revisit a page you just changed.
  • Get alerted if a technical problem is blocking your site.

Discover what people are searching for

The most fascinating part is the performance report. There you see the real searches that brought people in: the exact words people type, how many times you appeared, how many clicked. It’s a gold mine. Sometimes you discover people find you with words you never thought of, a clear signal of what you should be featuring on your site.

Search Console doesn’t tell you what you want to hear. It tells you the truth, and that’s exactly what you need to improve.

Fix the small snags without panicking

Every so often, Search Console flags a problem: a page it can’t find, a sitemap it can’t read, a tweak needed on mobile. It sounds technical, but most of the time it’s simple to correct once you know what to look at. The key is not to panic: the tool points to the problem and, often, the fix takes a few clicks.

If you want us to hook Search Console up to your site and look together at what it’s saying (which searches bring people in, what to improve first), write me. We can set it up in a few minutes and I’ll explain everything in plain language.
