Local SEO in Québec: where to start
Want to show up in Google when a customer in your neighbourhood searches for your services? Here are the first steps of local SEO, explained without the jargon.
Local SEO is the art of showing up when someone nearby types “hair salon Ahuntsic” or “accountant Trois-Rivières.” For a small business it’s often the most profitable channel: people searching this way are ready to buy. Here’s where to start, in order.
1. Claim your Google Business Profile
This is the highest-return step, and it’s free. Your Google Business Profile is the box that appears on the right in Google and on Maps. Fill it out fully: exact category, opening hours, phone, service area, real photos. A complete profile can multiply your calls without you touching your website.
2. Keep your contact details consistent
Google trusts businesses whose information matches everywhere. Make sure your name, address and phone number are identical — down to the character — on your site, your Google profile and directories (Yellow Pages, Yelp, local associations).
3. Write for the real questions
Your customers don’t search for “turnkey landscaping solutions”: they search for “landscaper south shore” or “how much does a deck cost.” Write pages and articles that answer those concrete questions, in their words. That’s exactly what a blog like this one is for:
- one page per service, with the city or region clearly named;
- articles that answer your customers’ frequently asked questions;
- real project examples, with location and context.
4. Collect reviews, and reply to them
Google reviews carry real weight, both for your ranking and for people’s trust. Get in the habit of asking after every good job, and reply to each one — even the lukewarm ones. It shows Google, and customers, that you’re alive and well.
Local SEO isn’t a sprint: it’s a garden you tend a little each month.
Do these four things before thinking about anything more advanced. They cover the essentials and deliver measurable results within weeks. The rest — regular content, links, technical work — comes next, once the foundations are solid.
