Image SEO: getting found through your photos too

Your photos can bring you clients, not just decorate your site. A few simple moves and Google Images becomes a doorway you’d forgotten.

By Jean-François Gauthier

We often forget Google has a whole engine dedicated to images. When someone searches “rustic wedding cake” or “hair salon Trois-Rivières,” they sometimes land on photos first. If yours are well prepared, they can become a doorway to your site, a door most of your competitors leave shut.

Give your files a real name

The photo straight out of your phone is often called “IMG_4827.jpg.” To Google, that means absolutely nothing. Before putting it online, rename it with simple words that describe the image: “rustic-wedding-cake.jpg.” It’s the first clue you offer the engine to understand what it’s looking at.

Separate words with hyphens, keep it short and descriptive, and avoid odd characters in the name. It seems tiny, but it’s a ten-second move that speaks directly to Google.

Alt text: describing for everyone

Alt text, the famous “alt,” is a short description of the image. It serves blind visitors first, whose software reads the description aloud. It also helps Google know what your photo shows. Describe simply and honestly what’s in view, as if you were explaining it to someone over the phone.

  • Rename the file with clear words before uploading.
  • Write short alt text that truly describes the image.
  • Shrink the photo’s weight so it loads fast.
  • Add a caption when it enriches the point.
  • Choose your own images over generic stock photos.

A light image loads fast

A photo straight from a camera can weigh several megabytes. Multiplied by ten on one page, it slows your site down, and a slow site loses visitors and points in Google’s eyes. Reduce your images’ size before publishing: the same photo can often weigh ten times less with no visible difference on screen.

A well-named, well-described photo works twice: it reassures your visitor, and it speaks to Google. Two minutes of care, months of visibility.

Your real photos are worth gold

People want to see your real shop, your real dishes, your real work, not soulless stock libraries. Beyond being more convincing, your own photos are unique: Google finds them nowhere else, which makes them valuable. Show your work as it is; it’s your best card.
