Custom, WordPress or website builder: which one for you?

“Should I go with WordPress, an online builder, or have a custom site made?” It’s probably the question I get asked most. The truth is there’s no universally wrong choice — only one that fits you better. Here are the three options, no fluff, with their strengths and their pitfalls.

The builder: fastest to get started

A drag-and-drop builder (like CJFG Studio) lets you put together a site yourself, no code, often for free. It’s ideal for launching an online presence quickly, testing an idea or sticking to a tight budget. The trade-off: you’re in charge, so the result depends on the time and care you put in. Watch out too for tools that lock you in — hence my stance: with the Studio, you export your code and stay free.

WordPress: the popular Swiss army knife

WordPress powers a huge share of the web, and for good reasons: a massive ecosystem, thousands of themes and plugins, plenty of people who know how to use it. It’s a solid choice, especially for a content-heavy blog or a site that changes often. The flip side: plugins pile up, the site slows down, and you have to keep up with updates and security — otherwise, trouble comes. WordPress is powerful, but it demands discipline.

Custom: tailored to your goals

A custom site is one designed and built for your business specifically: no template, no bloat. You keep what serves your goals and nothing else. The result is usually faster, more durable and better ranked, because every decision is intentional. The trade-off: it takes a higher upfront investment and a trusted partner. It’s the choice of businesses that want to stand out, not just “be online.”

How to choose, in practice

• Tight budget, need to start fast, willing to roll up your sleeves: a builder.
• Lots of content to publish, a team to maintain it: well-managed WordPress.
• You want a fast, unique site built for your goals: custom.

The right platform isn’t the trendiest one: it’s the one you’ll actually be able to keep alive.
